Mollusca - Scaphopods

The Phylum Mollusca is a large and varied invertebrate group within the Animal Kingdom. They are characterized by a soft body with a strong muscular foot and usually (but not always) covered by a shell. The Scaphopods are a small and relatively obscure Class of mollusks characterized by a small tusk shaped shell that is tapered and gently curved. Although most scaphopods are quite small (a few inches), the Pennsylvanian rocks of Texas have produced the largest known species with a length of almost two feet! They arose later in the Paleozoic than most mollusks but persist to the present.

In the Finis, scaphopods are small and generally fragmentary but can be found with diligent searching of fine matrix. The genus Plagioglypta is significantly more common than Prodentalium
